My Favorite New York Locations for Natural, Intentional Portraits

Finding the right backdrop isn’t just about a “pretty view”, it’s about finding a space that feels quiet enough to breathe in. While New York is famous for its energy, I’m always drawn to the corners where time seems to slow down.

Fort Tryon Park | Manhattan

If you want to escape the constant hustle of Central Park, I highly recommend Fort Tryon. Between the stunning bridge backdrops and the historic arches remaining from the C.K.G. Billings Mansion, this park is steeped in beauty and history. There’s also the lovely Heather Garden, which offers incredible floral variety. It feels like you get all the magic of a major Manhattan park, but in a quieter, more intimate setting with endless backdrops to explore.

Brooklyn Bridge Park | Brooklyn

Brooklyn Bridge Park I’m certain every NYC photographer has this on their list, and for good reason. How can you not? From the magnificent city skyline and the iconic Brooklyn Bridge to hidden pockets of nature and bits of local graffiti, the versatility here is unmatched. Whether you want industrial vibe or waterfront classic, this park delivers every time.

Oakland Lake | Queens

Oakland Lake For those based in Queens or Long Island, this is my go-to recommendation for a lush, natural backdrop. I particularly love Oakland Lake in the fall, but the way the greenery "umbrellas" the pathways and the willow trees bloom in the spring is truly magical. It feels like a hidden sanctuary away from the city pavement.

Prospect Park Lake House | Brooklyn

While all of Prospect Park is lovely, I am especially drawn to the area surrounding the Lake House. The structure itself is stunning, but it’s the combination of the water and the hidden greenery nearby that makes it special, especially during the transition of spring and fall. I always encourage my clients to stay for a picnic afterward; it’s the perfect way to end an unhurried morning of photos.

Washington Mews | Manhattan

This is one of my favorite  quiet spots. Tucked away and colorful, the Mews is consistently quiet, which is a rare gift in the city. The variety of backdrops and the way the light hits the cobblestones and ivy make for beautiful, varied frames. It’s a wonderful choice if you want a session that feels private and effortless.

The Beauty of the Everyday: Neighborhood Sessions

While I love the grand backdrops New York City offers, there is a special kind of magic in your own neighborhood. Choosing to shoot where you live is the most organic way to document this specific chapter of your lives. These are the streets where your family is growing and the corners you navigate every day. By staying local, we aren’t just taking portraits; we’re documenting a piece of your history in a place that already holds your heart.
